Mustafa is a former attacking, right side or central midfielder. His career started in 1993 at Al-Amir Bahri. He then spent the majority of his career at Al-Hilal Omdurman from 1996 to 2012. He retired in 2015 after short experiences with Al-Merrikh and Al-Ahli Shendi. He capped for Sudan 83 times, scoring 6 goals (other sources report 99 or 120 caps) and taking part to the African Cup of Nations in 2008 and 2012 as captain.
One of the most accomplished players in Sudan's history and considered one of the best players the country has ever produced, Mustafa was distinguished for his playmaking ability, very good technical skill, strong personality and leadership that made him a valid captain. He wasn't fast but possessed enough ball control, remarkable dribbling, shot technique and the ability to put his teammate in favourable positions thanks to accurate through passes. He was also a good set piece taker.
