Adam is a former centre back or sweeper. His career started in 1977 at Al-Deem Al-Wasat. He transferred to Al-Hilal Omdurman in 1982, playing there until his retirement in 1993. He took the role of team captain in his last seven seasons. A member of Sudan national team during the 1980s, he capped at least 5 times. He was a nominee for the African Ballon d'Or in two editions.
One of Sudan's most prominent players of the 1980s and considered one of the country's best ever defenders, Adam was hard to dribble due to his strength that made him tough even for the most powerful strikers. He possessed a correct timing in winning high balls to make up of his weakness in headers. In addition, he was one of the most skilled defenders alongside the likes of Tanqa. Adam didn't mind going forward, taking advantage of his solid ball distribution and more rarely getting himself going in the opposition's box.
