Beardsley is a former secondary striker or attacking midfielder, capable of playing as centre forward, winger and side midfielder. His career started in 1979 at Carlisle United. He alternated short spells between the English team and the Canadians of Vancouver Whitecaps until 1983. He played also one League Cup match for Manchester United in 1982. He transferred to Newcastle United in 1983, making 164 appearances and scoring 61 goals in four seasons. He signed for Liverpool in 1987 and had a similar experience, scoring 59 goals in 175 matches in four seasons. After spending two years at Everton, he came back to Newcastle United in 1993 for another excellent four-year stint, scoring 58 goals in 162 games. He retired in 2000 after short experiences with Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Fulham, Hartlepool United and Australian team Melbourne Knights. He capped for England 59 times, scoring 9 goals.
An excellent offensive player, Beardsley was the kind of striker who would pick up the ball in midfield and carry it forward. Initially criticised at Liverpool due to his lack of goals in his last season at Newcastle United, he proved everyone wrong and made himself known for his charming dribbling, excellent ball control and high speed in short space. Beardsley didn't always show notable opportunism, but he was eager to finish the attacking play, showing accuracy and power. Also a brilliant passer, he created many scoring chances for his teammates. In addition, his solid strength allowed him to often resist physical charges and his superb accuracy with his weak foot made him a potential threat in any situation.
His style of play wasn't much different during his second stint at Newcastle United, although he was deployed more in a centre forward role. He looked weaker in physical challenges as he fell way more often, gaining many free kicks and penalties in the process. He himself turned into an excellent penalty taker, scoring 20 times from the spot in addition to the 9 during his first spell at the club. He also improved his frequency and accuracy of long balls and crosses. What is to be highlighted is his more mature play that included a bigger support in midfield from a defensive standpoint as he recovered many balls, sometimes with well-timed slide tackles. His instinct inside the box was also notable, given that he was always ready to take advantage of any mistake made by the opposition's defenders.
