Khater is a former defensive, central or attacking midfielder. His career started at Al Ain where he made 203 league appearances from 1997 to 2008, scoring 38 goals. He then transferred to Al Jazira where he scored 22 goals in 181 matches in all competitions from 2008 to 2014. He retired one year later after a short spell at Fujairah. He capped for the United Arab Emirates 120 times, scoring 11 goals.
A versatile midfielder who could play either in front of the back-line or behind the forwards, Khater was known mostly for his excellent ability to shoot from long range with great power, scoring many goals that were crucial in his team's favor. He had good speed on the distance and decent dribbling skill that allowed him to push forward. His ball distribution was remarkable as he could start the play from the back with short passes or deliver long crosses to the box. He was often in charge of taking corners and free kicks. Capable of defending too, he could rely on good physical strength and tackling ability.
