INFO:Soentoro was an inside-forward. He spent almnost his entire career at Persija Jakarta, where he played from 1964 to 1968 and in 1971. He also had a short spell at PSMS Medan in 1969-70. He capped for Indonesia 61 times officially, scoring 37 goals. Including also the unofficial matches though the number increases to 74 appearances and 66 goals. He was national team captain for several years. He was included in the Asian All Stars in 1967 and 1968.
Regarded as one of the greatest players Indonesia has ever produced, Soentoro had a short physique but extraordinary talent and speed. He was one of the fastest players in Indonesia as well as a fierce striker and in-box predator despite not playing as centre forward. He was able in protecting the ball from the opposition's defenders, good and fast in the dribbling. These qualities combined with an accurate and powerful shot made him a feared striker. Among his many remarkable performances there's one against Feyenoord in 1965 and one against Dynamo Moscow in 1970. His team lost 6-1 against the Dutch but the first half ended 1-0 for the Indonesians thanks to a goal by Soentoro after he dribbled three defenders. The match against the Russians also ended with a loss but only 1-0 and Soentoro started the attack for the potential 1-1 when he made a beatiful pass for Iswadi Idris who then passed the ball to another teammate instead of shooting. In the late 1960s, he also scored a hat-trick against Werder Bremen that made coach Günter Brocker ask Soentoro to join the German club.
