Santoso is a former left-back. His career started at Arema Malang where he played from 1987 to 1995. He then spent four seasons at Persebaya Surabaya from 1995 to 1999. He returned to Arema Malang in 2002 after short spells with PSM Makassar in 1999-2000 and Persema Malang in 2001. He retired in 2004. He capped for Indonesia 41 times, scoring 6 goals from 1990 to 2000. He took part to the 2000 AFC Asian Cup as captain.
Often regarded as the best left-back in Indonesia's history, Santoso was known as a smart defender with the ability to run down the left flank at good speed. He was more effective in the attack thanks to quick dribbling and solid ball distribution with either foot. He was reliable, skilled and not physically weak despite a short height.
