Kurniawan is a former centre-forward. His career started in 1994 at Luzern in Switzerland. He returned to his native country one year later, joining Pelita Jaya where he played for four seasons, scoring 18 goals in 36 matches. He transferred to PSM Makassar in 1999, spending two years and scoring 37 goals in 58 appearances. He then had good seasons at PSPS Pekanbaru from 2001 to 2003, Persebaya Surabaya in 2003-04, Persija Jakarta in 2004-05. After a year in Malaysia at Sarawak FA, he spent the rest of his career in Indonesia, playing for several different teams and retiring in 2013. He capped for Indonesia 59 times, scoring 33 goals from 1995 to 2005.
Considered one of the best strikers in Indonesia history, Kurniawan was talented, gifted with high scoring instinct and above average speed off the ball. He was nicknamed "Skinny" for his short physique that allowed him though to move well between the opponents. A natural right-footed who could use the left too, he possessed remarkable shot technique, at times a thunderous strike, a solid heading ability despite his short height, and a decent passing skill. While his dribbling were usually accurate, he wasn't very quick on the ball when turning or making movements to the side.
