Bambang is a former centre-forward and secondary striker. He spent the majority of his career at Persija Jakarta where he played from 1999 to 2005, 2007 to 2013 and 2015 to 2019, scoring 163 goals in 352 matches. He also had a good two-year spell in Malaysia at Selangor FA from 2005 to 2007, scoring 42 goals in 63 games. He also played for EHC Norad in the Dutch third division in 2000 though he didn't do too well, and Pelita Raya in 2013-14. He capped for Indonesia 87 times, scoring 38 goals.
Considered one of the best Indonesian football players of all time and one of the most influential Indonesian football players in the 2000s and 2010s, Bambang was a complete striker, gifted with good technical skill, solid pace, accurate with both feet and head, capable of scoring difficult goals as well as easy ones thanks to a great instinct inside the box. He was also a solid penalty and free kick taker. His best quality though was his surprisingly outstanding heading despite his short height. In fact, he was unmatched in the air due to his high jumping ability and powerful headers. His overall remarkable abilities earned him strong interest from English club Derby County in 2008 but Bambang decided to remain in Indonesia. He also had a trial in Germany at Ingolstadt 04 but he wasn't signed.
