Lubis was an attacking or central midfielder. His career started in 1976 at PSKB Binjai. He then played for Mercu Buana from 1980 to 1983, Yanita Utama from 1983 to 1985, Kramayudha Tiga Berlian from 1985 to 1989, and Petrokimia Putra in 1989-90. Although his experience with the Indonesia national team was short, from 1983 to 1986, he was an important figure in the Indonesian squad, a key player in the team that nearly qualified for the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
Compared to Diego Maradona for his physique and charming playing styile in the midfield, Lubis was able to maintain the rhythm of the game thanks to his slick technique, sharp vision and accurate passes. His game in the attacking or central midfield role was technical and attracting: it consisted of dazzling dribbling that often outwit the opponents, and passes to the forward line. He was capable of controlling the pace of the game, posing himself as a threat for any opposing team. Unfortunately, Lubis lacked discipline as it wass common for him to get angry quickly, especially at young age, often getting into fights whenever an opposing player would start to tackle him. This attitude was the main reason why Lubis wasn't a mainstay in the national team for a longer period.
