His career started in 1962 at Bancroft North-End. He transferred to Mufulira Wanderers in 1969. After a short spell at Bancroft Blades in 1971, he joined Zambian Army (later Green Buffaloes) where he played from 1972 to 1976. He led the team to win three consecutive league titles from 1973 to 1975. He retired at the age of 30 as he felt it was time to give younger players a chance. He capped for Zambia 78 times, scoring 6 goals. He took part to the 1974 African Cup of Nations and was the only Zambian to be included in the Team of the Tournament. He was voted Zambian Sportsman of the Year in 1975. Considered one of the most outstanding defenders Zambia has ever produced, Chama was ever-present and towering, forming a solid defensive partnership with Dickson Makwaza in the Zambia national team. However, while Makwaza was always the last defender, Chama often pushed forward to support the attack and sometimes score an odd goal. He was allowed to do so thanks to wonderful abilities considering that he was a big man. He had the skill to carry the ball out of his area and exchange passes with his teammates, giving his teammates the possibility to free themselves and go forward. He was also unmatched in the air as he virtually won every aerial duel. He became a fan favourite, which is rare for a defender. The fans used to chant his name every time he made a crucial move. One of Chama's most memorable moments happened in the 1975 BP Cup final against Mufulira Wanderers as the defender appeared from nowhere to save the ball on the line with an acrobatic scissors kick. The match ended 1-1 and the Buffaloes eventually won it on penalties. |
