INFO:
Chilengi was a centre-back and sweeper. He spent his entire career at Green Buffaloes from 1976 to 1987. He capped for Zambia 108 times from 1981 to 1986, scoring at least one goal. He took part to the 1986 African Cup of Nations. He was supposed to the participate to the 1982 edition as well but he was sent home for disciplinary reasons.
A towering defender who stood over 6 feet tall, Chilengi started his career as midfielder but established himself as the regular centre-back for both Green Buffaloes and Zambia. He was though so versatile that he could adapt to any position he was asked to play in. He's fondly remembered for his leadership in the field, his never-say-die attitude and his high level of confidence. These qualities made him one of the best ever captain in Zambian football history, leading Green Buffaloes to league titles in 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1981. In addition to his defensive abilities, he was efficient in the attack too. He frequently rushed forward from his centre-back position, running deep into the opposition's box and often finishing with a goal. And when the attack wasn't successful, he would quickly go back to his defensive duties. He was also a solid set piece taker, especially quite accurate from the penalty spot, often pointing to one side before taking his kick and then shooting to the opposite side, which served to confuse the goalkeeper.
Among his most memorable performances are the two matches against Cameroon and the first against Algeria, all during the 1986 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. After protecting the back-line with an excellent performance in the historic 4-1 win over Cameroon in the first leg of the second round, Chilengi scored from free kick after four minutes in the second leg, securing his team to progress. The match ended 1-1. He then showed titanic efforts in the first leg of the third round against the strong Algerian team, managing to avoid several goals as Algeria won that match 2-0. Zambia had the chance to overturn the result in the second leg but Algeria won again, this time 1-0.
