INFO:
Katongo is a former secondary striker, centre forward and winger. His career started in 1999 at Butondo Western Tigers. He then played for Kalulushi Modern Stars in 2000-01. He transferred to Green Buffaloes in 2001, scoring 20 goals in 75 matches in four years. He was signed by South African team Jomo Cosmos in 2004 and scored 36 goals in 72 games in three seasons. He then had a solid experience in Europe, playing in Denmark for Brøndby in 2007-08, in Germany for Arminia Bielefeld from 2008 to 2010, and in Greece for Skoda Xanthi in 2010-11, scoring a total 24 goals in 139 appearances. After a fine three-year spell in China at Henan Jianye where he scored 21 goals in 71 matches, he returned to South Africa, playing for Golden Arrows in 2013-14 and Bidvest Wits in 2014-15. He retired in 2017 after one last contract with Zambian club Green Buffaloes. He capped for Zambia 103 times, scoring 23 goals and winning the 2012 African Cup of Nations as captain. He was rewarded with the Player of the Tournament. The same year, he was named BBC African Footballer of the Year.
One of the most exciting players during the 2012 African Cup, Katongo possessed high work-rate, mentality, leadership qualities, great speed, dribbling, shot technique, solid strength despite his short physique. He could score and create chances for his teammates as he had both shooting and passing skills. He was also a decent penalty taker and surprisingly capable header. He was excellent on the ball as he didn't move too quickly with it, but he would make sudden sprints to go past a few opponents with ease, even starting his progression from midfield. He could defend the ball with technique and tricks while waiting for a teammate to pass the ball. Otherwise, he would search for space to cross the ball in the box. He often used to cut inside before attempting to score, especially when he was deployed on the flank.
