His career started in 1960 at Orlando Pirates. Later, he transferred to the United States, playing for Atlanta Chiefs in 1968, 1969 and 1971, making 63 appearances and scoring 32 goals. He was a member of Philadelphia Ukrainians in 1970. During his time in the United States, he had the chance to play high-level friendlies against Manchester City and Santos. He returned to South Africa in 1971, joining Kaizer Chiefs where he played until his retirement in 1976. He was loaned to American club Denver Dynamos for the 1974 and 1975 seasons. Arguably one of the best strikers in South African football history, Motaung was fast, skillful and lightning quick in turning, moving past his opponents, sending them in the wrong direction and tearing defenses apart. He possessed an excellent ball control and a soft touch. But he treated the ball differently when he had to score. He was devastating with his incredible burst of speed, outrunning his opponents and flashing the ball into the net. He surely didn't mind dancing around with the ball to entertain the crowds. Many defenders tried to tackle him down constantly. And he often got hurt, but he never complained. He used the tactics of self-defence on the pitch to avoid trouble so that he could carry on playing. Furthermore, he had great temperament in big matches. During his early years at Orlando Pirates, many were jealous of his abilities, but he won over even the most fervid critics. |
