INFO:
Abbas is a former goalkeeper. His career started in the 1970s at Mwenge FC. In 1978, he signed for AFC Leopards (the team was called Abaluhya United until 1979) where he spent the majority of his career, playing there at least until 1985. He retired in 1990. He capped for Kenya 65 times between 1976 and 1989, helping the team winning three consecutive CECAFA Cups between 1981 and 1984. He was named Kenya goalkeeper of the year numerous times.
Although there's a neverending debate as to whether Siang'a or Abbas is the best ever Kenyan goalkeeper, most people consider the latter to deserve the title. Many experts regard him as one of the greatest keepers to come out of the African continent. He was a star not only in Kenya but also in many countries of East and Central Africa. He was rock solid between the posts, possessed great and sharp reflexes as well as shot-stopping ability, and was known especially for being a great penalty saver. He could stop penalties from all sides and angles of the goal. Apparently, Abbas had a way to stare at the opposing penalty takers that psyched them out, which added to his already good keeper's ability. Furthermore, he had an unusual dedication to training, fitness and working with weights (passion he shared with only two teammates, one of them being the legendary Wilberforce Mulamba). The weights proved effective as they made Abbas' hand so strong they he would always pass the ball to his teammates with his hands, and the ball could even go past midfield with great accuracy. He was rarely seen performing a goal kick. "Kenya One" ─ the nickname he earned in his country ─ was also vocal as he was often heard screaming at his teammates, especially those in defensive line.
The Tanzanian used to call Abbas golikipa mchawi ─ in English the "goalkeeping wizard". He had an oustanding performance in the 1982 CECAFA Cup final against hosts Uganda where Kenya's opponents dominated the match that ended 1-1 after extra time only for Abbas to save two penalties during the shootout, helping his team win the tournament. Unfortunately, he was never able to showcase his skills in the Africa Cup of Nations as Kenya didn't qualify during his tenure in the national team. In Kenya, it's believed that had he played in the modern era, he would've probably played for a top European team.
