Bassanga is a former left-back and left-sided midfielder. He played for Gor Mahia in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, being instrumental in the club's success, winning the 1987 Africa Club Winners' Cup. He capped for Kenya 38 times from 1980 and 1984, scoring once and winning three consecutive CECAFA Cups between 1981 and 1983.
A utility player equally comfortable in the back-line as much as he was in midfield, Bassanga is considered Kenya's best ever left-back and one of the best African defenders of his era. He was a consistent and no-nonsense player in defense thanks to his great pace, physicality, while his creativity was a valid addition when he overlapped or when he was deployed in a more advanced role.
