Mohammed Polo is a former left-winger. He spent the majority of his career at Hearts of Oak where he played from 1973 to 1979, 1985 to 1987 and 1989 to 1992 for a total 232 appearances and 145 goals. He also played for Al-Wasl in the United Arab Emirates, Canon 105 Libreville in Gabon, and Great Olympics in Ghana. He retired in 1993. He capped for Ghana 54 times, scoring 20 goals. Although he retired at 37, he reached his peak early in his career as he was named Ghana Footballer of the Year in 1975, finished 4th placed in the selection for Africa Player of the Year by France Football Magazine in 1977, and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978 where he also included in the Team of the Tournament.
Arguably the best ever Ghanaian left-winger, in 2020 Mohammed Polo claimed to be the greatest player Ghana has ever produced. While his statement seems very bold, it was backed by legends Osei Kofi and Abedi Pelé as well as famous Ghanaian sports journalists Kwabena Agyapong and Kwabena Yeboah. Agyapong believes that Polo is the most technically gifted player to ever emerge from Ghana. Widely praised for his outstanding technical qualities and dribbling skills, Polo had earned the nickname "Dribbling Magician". He was capable of ensuring strength in numbers to his team thanks to his ability to get past the opponents with ease. A natural left-footed player, he was also known for his strength, pace, sublime ball control, body swerves, distribution, passing skill, goal scoring ability and long range shots. He was also accurate from free kick and penalty.
His qualities as assist-man were instrumental during the 1978 African Cup as he provided the decisive pass to Karim Abdul Razak in the semifinal against Tunisia and the one for Opoku Afriye who scored the second goal in the final against Uganda. But before his performance at the African Cup, Polo had his first magical match in 1977 against Mufulira Wanderers. The Zambian was leading 3-0 in the semifinal of the African Cup of Champions and even the commentator was sure that Mufulira was qualified to its first final. Little he knew that Polo was about to provide three assists for Anas Seidu and Peter Lamptey, and in all the goals the winger had to fall back deep to his own half to pick up the ball before dribbling through the Mufulira players.
