He spent the majority of his career at Étoile du Sahel where he played from 1991 to 1997 and 2003 to 2005, making 179 appearances and scoring 47 goals at least. He had a good spell at Freiburg from 1997 to 2001, playing 124 matches and scoring 22 goals. During his time with Freiburg, he became the first Arab player to captain a German club. Baya also played for Beşiktaş in 2001-02 and Tunisian team M'saken in 2005-06. He capped for Tunisia 83 times, scoring 17 goals and reaching the 1996 African Cup of Nations final. He was named in the Team of the Tournament. Primarily an attacking midfielder, Baya was a superb playmaker distinguished by high technique, remarkable dribbling skill, accurate ball distribution, quickness on the ball, pace off the ball when rushing towards the opposing goal. His main task was to provide his teammates with perfect passes, either from the back or closer to the opposition's area. He did so with either foot, although his natural was the right, using the inside and outside equally well. He was especially effective with his through passes that could split any defense and put a striker in optimal position to score. And he had no problem at keeping the ball even against two or three opponents or trying to get past a defender one-on-one while waiting for a teammate to assist. His scoring ability was also remarkable. He wasn't always accurate when aiming the goal but he had solid power in his feet and a great shooting technique. He was a key player for Tunisia in 1996 but he became less consistent in the following years, much like the rest of the team. Spoiler: show |
