Odiye is a former centre-back, left-half and left-back. His career started in the late 1970s at ACB Lagos. He transferred to the United States in 1978, playing for San Francisco Dons until 1982 and for Greek-Americans from 1983 to 1994. He capped for Nigeria 39 times between 1976 and 1980, scoring 2 goals.
Regarded as one of the Nigeria's greatest ever defenders, Odiye started his career as left-back before establishing himself as a centre-back and later also as a robust midfielder on the left in front of the defense, becoming part of the outstanding Nigeria back-line that included Christian Chukwu and goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala. Odiye was a no-nonsense and hardworking defender, known for his skill, fighting spirit, never-say-die attitude, hard sliding tackles that often bruised the opponent's leg. He was the one to do the dirty job by sliding any opposing striker as soon as he had the chance. He was also excellent in the air with acrobatic defending, flicks, flying headers, diving headers, overhead kicks and half volleys. He often left the field covered in mud and dust for all his sliding to stop the opponents and dives to head the ball away. Odiye's trademark was probably the backward header which he often used to pass the ball to a teammate after spotting him and calculating his position, showing great vision. Unfortunately, he's often remembered for the unlucky own goal he scored with one of his headers in a decisive 1978 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Tunisia.
