His career started in 1997 at Lille where he was a reserve for three seasons. After spending one good year at Sedan in 1997-98, he signed for PSG where he always gave his best despite not being much of a regular starter. He left in 2001 after 71 appearances and 2 goals. He then played for Montpellier, Birmingham City, Portsmouth, Sedan, and Nîmes, retiring in 2009. He capped for Senegal 36 times, possibly 38, finishing runner-up at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and taking part to the FIFA World Cup the same year. Cissé was a solid player who relied on commitment and defensive skills as he possessed remarkable sense of position, anticipation, man marking and covering abilities as well as good tackling and physical strength. He even had the best of none other than Andriy Shevchenko in multiple occasions during the two 2000-01 Champions League games against Milan. He also had decent pace and good heading ability. On the other hand, he lacked from technical and ball distribution standpoints. He often struggled to control the ball and it wasn't uncommon that he would deliver a bad pass, sometimes even putting an opponent in a situation to score. Spoiler: show |
