He spent his entire career at Kaloum Star in the 1960s and 1970s. He capped for Guinea 56 times, scoring 33 goals between 1960 and 1973. He's still Guinea's all-time top scorer. Also known as "Mr. Goal" during his playing days, Kandia Diallo was the best striker of the first generation of Guinean footballers. Many experts consider him the greatest Guinean striker of all time. His extraordinary sense of goal and ability to score from all positions made him a nightmare for all opposing defences. His efficiency in front of the goal and regularity in scoring made him become the ultimate goalscorer of his era in his native country. Kandia Diallo played well, carrying the ball, dribbling and scoring, making the crowds have fun. He allegedly scored in nearly every game. His performances were the main reason why Guinea qualified for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico. During the qualifiers, he scored both goals in the second leg of the final game against Algeria which ended 2-2. Guinea had won the first leg 1-0, also thanks to a superb Kandia Diallo goal. Another memorable performance dates to 20th September 1970 in the second leg of the African Cup of Champions Clubs quarter-final against the Ivorian team Stade d'Abidjan. Kandia Diallo was well marked by the two opposing centre-backs captain Lamizana and Mama Ouattara. The Guinean striker was still playing with elegance and no issues. At the end of an attack started by Morciré, a cool-headed Kandia Diallo anticipated Abidjan's goalkeeper and scored. That match ended 4-3 and Kaloum Star made to the semifinal, unfortunately lost to DR Congo giants of TP Englebert (later known as Mazembe). |
