He spent his entire career at Hafia FC from the 1960s to 1978 and was part of the legendary team that won the African Cup of Champions Clubs three times. He capped for Guinea at least 24 times between 1967 and 1974, scoring 5 goals. He was selected as part of the African all stars team that played against Brazil in the 1972 Independence Cup. Undoubtedly the best Guinean winger of his generation and possibly the best left-winger of the entire African continent, Camara had a unique and specific style of play. He had a short, slim and light frame that allowed him to be spectacular on the ball. He was technical, fine and elegant on the ball as he hooked it while dribbling even the toughest defenders who often received instructions by their staff about how to stop Camara. The Guinean winger would always try to use body feints against defenders who constantly kept him on check, belted him and pulled his jersey, dodging their legs skillfully to avoid any physical challenge. Nonetheless, he never complained whenever an opponent tackled him down. But once a defender was beaten, Camara would leave the ball on the spot before inevitably darting forward. The defenders tried their best to anticipate him but Camara knew how to take advantage of his speed, earning cheers from the crowd. He was excellent in carrying the ball with elegance, pace, accuracy and astonishing agility with his natural left foot along the touchline, to the point the any opponent's tackle attempt resulted in a throw-in or goal kick. He wasn't particularly prolific but was gifted with a lightning shot that he often delivered with a volley that would surprise the goalkeeper. Even though he was an expert dribbler who liked to challenge defenders one-on-one, he usually preferred a collective and balanced attack with extremely rapid pass exchanges with Chérif Souleymane or Petit Sory. Camara could've had a longer career, hadn't it been for a knee injury that accompanied him for several years. |
