He spent his entire career at Hafia FC during the 1960s and 1970s and was the starting right defender during Hafia's golden era. He capped at least 26 times for Guinea between 1970 and 1976. Bangoura was a very tactical and disciplined side-back, described as « a player with an impressive physique and lots of muscles with which he intimidated his opponents and controlled the ball freely » by journalist Amadou Djouldé Diallo during a tribute in 2023 following the passing of the former defender. Bangoura himself gave a better idea of his style of play in a 2012 interview where he described the action that led to Hafia's decisive goal in the second leg of the 1975 African Cup of Champions Club final, won 2-1 by the Guineans against the Nigerian team Enugu Rangers: « Naby Camara told the us that there were no attackers nor defenders; whoever was holding the ball had to continue the action. In the final minutes of the match, we were cornered by the pressing of Enugu Rangers that wanted to win at all costs. I was at the halfway line while right-winger Petit Sory was defending. I sprint forward after asking Sory to provide me with a long ball, which he did perfectly; I wasn't fast but that day, I ran. When a Nigerian defender came at me, I was already in the penalty area, and instead of taking the ball, he tackled me; the referee was very close and whistled, awarding us a penalty that was convered by captain Thiam Tolo ». |
