Amokachi is a former centre-forward and winger. His career started in 1989 at Ranchers Bees in his native country Nigeria. He transferred to Belgium in 1990, signing for Club Brugge where he scored 37 goals in 93 appearances up until 1994. He then played for Everton between 1994 and 1996, and Beşiktaş between 1996 and 1999, scoring 14 goals in 54 matches and 25 in 112 respectively. He then stopped playing and officially retired in 2002 after missing several chances to get contracts due to failed medical tests, injuries, unfit physique and an overall bad medical condition. He capped for Nigeria 44 times, scoring 13 goals and winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and the 1996 Olympics.
Amokachi wasn't as skilled as some of his teammates in the Nigerian team, such as Okocha and Finidi, but he had determination and a fighting spirit like no one else, moving across the field constantly. He could fight for any ball close to the opposition's area, in midfield or even in his own half to recover possession. He was very fast on and off the ball and could rely on a great physical strength that made up for his dribbling skill which wasn't always accurate. He was quick and careful in making his run towards the goal and had a solid shot overall, but he often missed badly when attempting a volley or a difficult shot. He was also good in the air and in the ball distribution, especially with his short passes with which he often contributed to set up the attack.
