Gyan is a former centre-forward. His career started in 2002 at Liberty Professionals in his native country Ghana. From 2003 to 2011, he played for Udinese, Modena, Stade Rennais, and Sunderland. He then had his most prolific spell in the United Arab Emirates with Al-Ain where he scored 128 goals in 124 appearances between 2011 and 2015. Following underwhelming experiences with Shanghai Port, Al-Ahli Dubai, Kayserispor, North East United in India, and Legon Cities in Ghana, he retired in 2021. A former captain of Ghana, he's the national team's top scorer with 51 goals in 109 matches.
Gyan was a very good striker who possessed great pace and solid dribbling skills that made him effective during counter-attacks and when he had enough space to move. He was reactive in front of the goal as he knew the right time to sprint and would always take advantage of any mistake made by an opposing defender. While his shots weren't consistently accurate and usually not packed with remarkable power, he could be a threat from less favourable positions. Even though he was a centre-forward, he moved a lot outside of the area, supporting the other strikers with decent ball distribution. Additionally, Gyan was a good set piece taker, often taking free kicks and being the regular penalty taker for Ghana.
