INFO:
Sok Sun Hean is a former central or attacking midfielder, though he started his career as a right-winger. According to Kampuchea Sport, he started his career at 18 years of age and played for Phnom Penh Municipality FC from 1968 to 1975, when he was forced to retire due to the Cambodian was like all other athletes from the country, and was team top scorer in 1971 with 11 goals. He was briefly captain of the team in 1974. He represented the Cambodia national team, including at the 1972 Asian Cup where he played at least 3 games and scored 1 goal in the 4-0 win over Kuwait. He scored at least 6 more goals: 1 against Thailand in 1971, 2 against Myanmar and 1 against Sri Lanka in 1972, 1 against Singapore and 1 against Malaysia in 1973.
Listed as a right-winger by Vietnamese archives of the 1970s, Hean played in that position only at the very beginning of his career before turning into a central or attacking midfielder. The Cambodian Army Sports Record listed his height at 171 cm in 1971 and also mentioned his endless running of averaged 11 km per match. Kampuchea Sport described Hean in 1971 as a box-to-box midfielder with high offensive prowess and in 1973 as a technical player with exceptional close control in tight spaces and swirling dribbling that consisted mainly of him suddenly changing direction with his left foot. In 1973, the Phnom Penh Post also described his dribbling ability as an inside turn with the left foot followed by pushing the ball forward with the outside. He allegedly used this move in the historic win against Kuwait to prepare for his successful striker, which was a curled shot from the edge of the box, according to a Phnom Penh Press Trust article from 15 May 1972.
Among his weaknesses was his aerial ability as he rarely contested the ball in the air or scored headers. He also seemed to lack physical resistance under pressing, especially when marked, as mentioned in a Vietnamese report of a friendly match against Hải Phòng FC. Hean's biggest flaw was his tendency to make reckless tackles as he apparently received 7 red cards in 6 seasons with his club: 3 in 1973 in matches against Military Police FC (twice) and Kandal Province according to Kampuchea Sport, and a straight red card in 1971 for a two-footed tackle on a Preah Vihear FC’s midfielder according to the National Sports Committee archives.
