He played in his native country Cambodia in the early 1970s, possibly started in the 1960s. According the 1971 articles from the newspaper Kampuchea Sport, his club was Phnom Penh based club Royal Bodyguard FC. He represented the Cambodian national team at the 1972 Asian Cup, playing at least 3 games and scoring 2 goals in the third place match against Thailand. He allegedly fled to France in 1975 due to the war in Cambodia. While Cambodian sports press from the 1970s usually described Kimchi as a technical midfielder with dribbling and playmaking abilities, it looks like he was a defender who played like a midfielder due to his constant overlapping runs and sharp crosses, as written by Siam Sport in a retrospective article from the 1990s. The daily newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea mentioned Kimchi's ruthless but overall fair tackling as he usually anticipated the pass before the ball could reach an opponent. The Kampuchea Bulletin described his performance against Thailand by describing him as a wall in defence, capable of making powerful and accurate clearances. According to a 1972 article published by the Kampuchea Bulletin, Kimchi's first goal was a header while the second was a rocket shot that couldn't be stopped by the goalkeeper. Thai newspaper Siam Rath also mentioned Kimchi's second goal and described it as a free kick from nearly 30 meters with a curve. |
