Mayanja is a former attacking midfielder or striker. His career started in 1985 at Police FC Jinja. He was signed by professional team Kampala City FC in 1987 and stayed there until 1992, winning one league title and two national cups. He then played for Egyptian team El-Masry from 1992 to 1995, and Espérance de Tunis in 1995-96. He eventually returned to Kampala City where he won one more domestic cup before leaving once again in 2000. He retired one year later following a short experience with Omani semi-professional club Lowi FC. He represented Uganda from 1988 to 1999, earning at least 28 caps and scoring not less than 10 goals. With his national team he won three CECAFA titles. He was voted Uganda football of the year in 1993 and 1996.
Regarded as one of the best players of his generation thanks to his skills and elegance on the ball, Mayanja was renowned for his ability to control the ball and create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. Journalist Hassan Badru Zziwa of The Observer recalled Mayanja's flair in his passing, game reading and ease at which he scored goals. These abilities set him apart as a true icon of his era. As one of the most prolific attacking midfielders in Ugandan football, Mayanja earned a reputation for his extraordinaty gift on the pitch. His only flaw was his temperental attitude that got him silly bookings. The most notable red card was the consequence of him kicking the ball away during a match against Mbale Heroes after referee Ajab Wasswa whistled for a foul. This red card forced him to miss the last game of the season. Mayanja also got a red card for dissent in a CAF Champions League game against AFC Leopards.
In 1988, he scored an acrobatic scissor overheard kick in the 3-0 win over KK Cosmos that left spectactors in awe. The same year, he made his debut for the Ugandan national team in a friendly against Zambia XI that ended 1-1. Later that year, he missed a penalty in a World Cup qualifier that Uganda still won 1-0 against Malawi. Unfortunately, Uganda lost the second leg 3-1 and was eliminated.
1989 was, instead, a bad year for the midfielder: during a match against Uganda Airlines, he suffered a knee injury that forced him out for the rest of the season.
He returned in February 1990 to help Kampala City win the national cup by scoring five goals throughout the competition, including three against rivals SC Villa in the finals. Still in 1990, he scored a spectacular equaliser against Tanzania to lead Uganda to the extra-time of the CECAFA Cup semifinal. "The Cranes" eventually won the match at the penalty shootout, moving on to the final and winning the trophy.
In 1991, he was yet again a key player for Kampala City thanks to his 11 goals that helped his team win the league. His most memorable goal was a diving header against Nsambya FC which turned out to be a league decider.
The following year was even more prolific as Mayanja scored 23 goals without even finishing the season as he was signed by Egyptian giants El-Masry. He scored 8 goals in his debut season, helping the club to a fourth place in the league. During his time in Egypt, Mayanja was nicknamed by the fans Mia Mia in reference to his gritty and spirited effort. In fact, Mia Mia literally means "one hundred percent" or "perfect". In 1992, the midfielder also won another CECAFA Cup, and he played a big role for his country in 1992 and 1993 as well by scoring 6 goals during the 1994 AFCON qualifying campaign.
In 1995, he unfortunately had to leave El-Masry following a fallout with his employers despite being voted best player in the Egyptian League. And so, he signed for another big African Club in Espérance de Tunis.
He only played in Tunisia for the 1995-96 season as the contract was terminated because of a serious knee injury. Therefore, he returned home, signing again with Kampala City.
1997 was yet another successful year as he won the league as team captain and finished top scorer with 18 goals alongside Umeme's Ogwang Charles. Just like he did in 1991, he scored a league decider with a diving header, this time against SC Villa. In 1997, he also won another CECAFA Cup.
He retired from international football in 1999 with his final match for Uganda being a loss against Tunisia where he asked to be substituted at the end of the first half.
