Mbemba is a centre-back who can also play as defensive midfielder, especially for his country, and right-back on occasion. His career started in 2013 at Anderlecht where he spent two years, making 77 appearances and scoring 9 goals. In 2015, he joined Newcastle United where he played regularly during the first season. He left in 2018 after 59 matches and 1 goal. He signed for Porto in 2018 but only became a regular starter in the 2019-20 season, and eventually played a total 138 games, scoring 9 goals. He signed for Olympique Marseille in 2022 and had remarkable first two years at the club, making 85 apperances and scoring 13 goals. He didn't make a single appearance in the last season with OM and was sold to Lille for the 2025-26 season. He represented DR Congo 110 times so far, scoring 7 goals.
A solid defensive player since his early years at Anderlecht and Newcastle, he proved to be an excellent tackler gifted with physical strength, ability in the air and decent pace. He slowed down his speed during his time at Porto and Marseille, becoming less reactive overall, but his positional sense and anticipation improved a lot as well as his aerial game that often made him a threat in the opposing box thanks to his headers. Even though he's not particularly skilled from a technical standpoint, he doesn't mind attempting to carry the ball forward or support the attack, occasionally showing a decent shooting ability too. His ball distribution is also solid but inconsistent.
