Federico Marchetti is a goalkeeper. He had his best time at Lazio, where he made 194 appearances from 2011 to 2017. Lazio signed him from Cagliari, whereh he played 70 games from 2008 to 2010. He had experiences also at Pro Vercelli, Crotone, Torino, Biellese, AlbinoLeffe and Genoa, where he last played until 2022. He capped for Italy 11 times. He was the first choice during the 2010 FIFA World Cup due to Buffon's injury in the beginning of the first match.
Regarded in his prime as a possible successor to Gianluigi Buffon in the Italian national team, Marchetti was one of the best Italian goalkeepers of his generation. Strong but also agile for his size, he was a reliable shot stopper, distinguished for his calmness, concentration, excellent reflexes between the posts and remarkable speed as well as braveness when rushing off the goal to face an incoming striker one-on-one. His performances weren't particularly consistent and his physical condition not optimal. Moreover, he had issues with the management of the clubs he played for. As he allowed four goals from five shots on goal in the second and third 2010 World Cup games, his performance in the tournament was likely one of the reasons why Italy got eliminated.
