Agger is a former centre back, capable of playing also as left back. He began his career and retired Brøndby, playing there from 2004 to 2006 and from 2014 to 2016 for a total of 85 matches and 7 goals. He had his longest and best experience at Liverpool, where he made 232 appearances from 2005 to 2014, scoring 14 times. He gained 75 caps for Denmark, scoring 11 goals.
Agger was a strong and capable defender with fine tackling ability. He wasn't very fast but possessed decent technique. Excellent in the air, he scored several headers. He had good working rate and could deliver accurate and fast long passes from the back. Moreover, he was a threat with his powerful long range shots and was a penality specialist for Denmark, having scored 8 of his 14 goals from the penalty spot.
