Martyn is a former goalkeeper. His career began in 1987 at Bristol Rovers. He played mostly for Crystal Palace from 1989 to 1996 and Leeds United from 1996 to 2003, making respectively 349 and 273 appearances. He retired in 2006 after three seasons at Everton. He gained 23 caps for England, mainly as second choice behind David Seaman. He took part to 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups as well as the 2000 UEFA Euro.
A goalkeeper who consistently had great performances, Martyn was gifted with excellent reaction and goalkeeping skills but didn't have a great leap. He was fine out of the goal and, despite his big physique, he possessed good sprint to save balls when the goal was uncovered. He also was good with his feet, especially for making saves.
