Carragher is a former centre back, side back and defensive or central midfielder. He spent his entire career at Liverpool from 1996 to 2013, making 737 appearances and scoring 4 goals, winning two FA Cups, three Football League Cups, two FA Community Shields, a UEFA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and most important the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League. He gained 38 caps for England.
An attacking midfielder in his youth career, Carragher was turned into side back in his early years with the "Reds" and occasionally acted as centre back when he had to replace Sami Hyypiä as well as defensive or central midfielder with England. He showed nice run on both short and long distance, decent technique and accurate crossing ability. Already good in the defence, he possessed good tackling as well as timing of reaction and interception. He was though labeled as "limited defender" because quickness and technique weren't still good enough for a mainly attacking side back. He came to his own when his primary position was changed to centre back ─ he occasionally still played as defensive midfielder for England. Regarded as one of the best English defenders of his generation, he was renowned for his stamina, work-rate, leadership, commitment, consistency and longevity. Strong and brave, he was a hard tackler, aggressive but fair, capable of chasing down the opponents and snatching the ball at the last moment. Moreover, he was tactically clever, could read the game well, organise it from the back, was strong in the air, possessed excellent anticipation ability and good long throw.

He still occasionally played as DMF/CMF at the beginning of this millennium, at least for England.

Don't think that he ever was worth orange value for DEF, especially not for such a long time. I personally see him at 87 or 88. Same goes for STA 84 in that period, even when playing as SB (that happened much more rarely) he usually concentrated on his defensive work and didn't cover that much ground during the games. I'd also question RES 85, his tackles weren't clean all the time. What on the other hand easily can be on orange is MEN, that has always been his biggest strength IMO.

I agree. In this country he had the reputation of a solid and reliable yet unspectacular defender. I think most Liverpool fans would say that Hyypiä was the better defender of the two. What really made Jamie a legend was his consistency, reliability, longevity and his fighting spirit, not some world class defending ability. I’d give him 87 DEF (or 88 and bump Hyypiä up to 89) and 84 RES. I’d also give him white AGI and maybe take a point off both TS and ACC as he famously struggled against fast and tricky players (Henry and Zola are famous examples). And yeah I agree with orange MEN too.
