Butt was a defensive or central midfiedler. He spent the most of his career with Manchester United from 1991 to 2004, playing 387 matches and scoring 26 goals. He won everything with the "Red Devils". He played also for Newcastle United and Birmingham City. He retired in 2011. He capped 39 times for England.
Butt was a good player, gifted with high stamina and mentality. His main task was to recover balls and cover the spaces in the midfield but he also had speed, nice dribbling, a powerful and dangerous long range shot, header ability and the one to distribute the balls, especially with short passes. He had a nice technique and could make first time touches.
