INFO:
Massei was an inside forward who played in Argentina and Italy. His career began at Rosario Central in 1951. During the time in Argentina he had the chance to play for the Albiceleste but he refused because he wanted to cap for Italy. After 80 matches and 44 goals, he transferred to Inter in 1955. In three seasons he played 47 matches and scored 19 goals. An oriundo, thanks to his performances he gained the call for Italy and he would've needed just three matches with the U-21 to be eligible for the main team. Unfortunately he had a bad knee injury that forced him out for a season until Inter sold him to Triestina. After only one season in Friuli, he joined S.P.A.L. where he found himself again. Massei played 244 games and scored 52 times with the Estensi from 1959 to 1968, helping the team to reach the historical 5th place in 1959-60 Serie A and the 1961-62 Coppa Italia final.
Massei was a slow player and because of that he was nicknamed pachorra and fatiga. He was though remarkable for his excellent technique, great vision of play and scoring ability; he was a good header and his shots, despite not being very strong, they were dangerous thanks to the huge effect that Massei could give to the ball. When he played for S.P.A.L. he was like a coach in the field: a teamworker and coordinator, he gave rhythm and delivered numerous passes with his geometries, while his teammates moved around him like he was an orchestra director; he hardly had a bad performance, playing always at high levels, showing great mentality. However, the player himself once said during an interview that he used to play with minimim efficiency after the injury. Therefore, if what he said was true, what could've he done if he didn't have that injury? Massei has also been S.P.A.L. captain for five seasons and he was the main penalty taker − he holds S.P.A.L.'s record for most penalties scored with 14 penalties − and he left an indelible mark on the memory of the club and its fans. Massei is arguably one of the best and most underrated players who came to Serie A from a foreign country.
