Davies is a former centre forward. He spent the majority of his career at Fulham, playing there from 1978 to 1984 and from 1986 to 1991, for a total of 450 appearances and 178 goals. He played also for Chelsea and Manchester City. He retired in 1993. He capped for Wales 16 times, scoring twice.
Davies was a good striker gifted with great scoring sense and good heading ability. He was one of the most feared forwards in the English Second and Third Division, where he played with Fulham. While he lacked notable pace, he had clever movements, quick reaction, and the ability to unmark himself from his opponent. Therefore, it wasn't hard for him to score. Even though he was a centre forward, he often started his attacking play from outside the box, showing also nice passing ability and teamwork.
