Roger Mendy is a former sweeper and centre-back. His career started in 1978 at Jeanne d'Arc in his native country Senegal. He transferred to French team Toulon in 1986, spending three seasons in which he made 102 appearances, scoring 6 goals. He had his most successful time at Monaco from 1989 and 1992, playing 115 matches, scoring 6 goals and winning a Coupe de France other than reaching the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup final. He also played for Pescara and Al-Nassr before retiring in 1995. He capped for Senegal 70 times, scoring 3 goals.
Mendy was a very good defender, gifted with remarkable positional sense and careful in both marking his opponent and covering the area behind the other defenders. He was physically strong and excellent in the air as he won virtually all high balls, easily clearing the ball with a header. He wasn't notably fast but had the right timing to make a short sprint to intercept a ball and anticipate an opponent, although he wasn't always accurate in tackling. Whilst he wasn't particularly gifted from a technical standpoint but possessed decent ball control and could carry the ball forward from time to time. His passing skills were also good as he could deliver fast passes towards a teammate even close to the opposition's area, proving to be an essential player for the link-up play from the back. However, his long passes especially were sometimes out of range or too high.
