INFO:

Andrija Anković (16 July 1937 – 28 April 1980) was a Croatian footballer played on position centre foward and also in midfield or second striker. Center forward of huge strength, speed, courage and strong shot. Robust leader of the attack, sharp in duels, solid, penetrating and very efficient in the final actions. The center forward of the most modern type, goal scorer, fast, penetrating, combative, unstoppable, practically kept Hajduk from sinking completely with his goals. Anković was not technically well-gifted, but he gladly worked as a supplement under the guidance of the old barbarian coach Luka Kaliterna in the yard of the Old Home, where the juniors practiced technical details. One episode best depicts the character of Anković: Vojvodina catastrophically defeated Hajduk in Novi Sad in 1963 with 7: 1, and with the result 0: 7, in the 87th minute, Anković scored a goal, ran into the net, took the ball, took it to the center, he told his teammates:

- Come on, we can score another goal.

Anković started his career with GOŠK Gabela before moving to NK Neretva Metković. He later played for top Croatian side Hajduk Split in the Yugoslavian First League. He played 326 matches and scored 250 goals for Hajduk and positioned on 7. place of the best goalscorers in history of Hajduk, becoming one of the club's legends. Finally, he played for German club 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

In 1960 Anković was a member of the Yugoslavian team which won gold at the Rome Olympics.

As a player, he was remembered for a typical goalscorer's instinct.

In honor and remembrance, in Gabela near Čapljina, playing traditional memorial soccer tournament "Andrija Anković".

Quote:
