INFO:

Zlatko Kranjčar (born November 15, 1956) is a football manager and former striker.

Born in Zagreb, he started to play for Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 10 in 1966 and stayed in the club until 1983. Kranjcar made his debut before his 17th birthday in Dinamo Zagreb's senior squad. He appeared in a total of 556 matches for the club and scored 256 goals in all competition. In Yugoslavian first division he appeared 261 times and scored 99 goals. He is also on 4th place in Dinamo best scorers list, and also 4th in Dinamo most caps players. A solid, muscular center-forward in the mould of Jean-Pierre Papin, Zlatko Kranjcar could also fill in the role of a supporting striker or an offensive midfielder. He was one of the most popular Yugoslav players of the era and gave his image to Dinamo's mascot doll. Known by the nickname of Cico. Scored in two Dinamo's Yugoslav Cup-winning finals, starred in the championship-winning team of 1981/82.

Then in 1984, he transferred to Austrian club SK Rapid Wien for which he played until 1990. After scoring 99 League goals for the Dinamo, went on to shine in Rapid Vienna alongside Hansi Krankl and Antonin Panenka, adding 115 league goals and eight different trophies to his tally. Was a starter in the 1985 Cup Winners' Cup finals against Everton in Rotterdam. The last club in his playing career was VSE St. Pölten for which he played for two months in 1991. In those two months he made 13 appearance and scoring only 2 goals.

Between 1977 and 1983 he collected 11 caps and scored 3 goals for Yugoslavia. He also has two caps and scored one goal for the Croatian national team and is notable as the first team captain of the Croatian team in their first international match against the United States on October 17, 1990 in Zagreb.

He started his coaching career in 1991 as an advisor in FC Austria Klagenfurt, from 1992 until 1994 he coached a Croatian club HNK Segesta and in 1994 he transferred to Croatia Zagreb, where he won the Croatian championship and cup in the first season. In 1996 he turned back to Austria to coach the club FC Linz and turning back to Croatia in 1997 he coached the clubs NK Slaven Belupo, HNK Segesta (again) and NK Samobor until 1998, when he came back to Croatia Zagreb and led the club to another win in both the Croatian championship and cup as well as to an appearance in the UEFA Champions League. In 1999 he started to coach an Egyptian club FC El Masry and in 2000 he went on to coach a Slovenian club NK Mura, where he also stayed for one season. In 2002 he became the Croatian championship winner with NK Zagreb. That was the first NK Zagreb title in Croatian first division and in history. NK Zagreb is the only Croatian club that won championship except Dinamo and Hajduk.

After Croatia's unsuccessful appearance at the Euro 2004, Zlatko Kranjčar was named the new coach of the country's national squad and he led the team in 18 international matches. They played fifteen matches in the World Cup 2006 qualifying rounds and won the group, but performed relatively badly in their three 2006 World Cup finals matches and were eliminated in the group stages. Due to this and to Kranjčar's inability to gracefully handle growing criticism, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) decided not to renew his contract on July 14, 2006. In June 2007, he took over coaching position in United Arab Emirates team Al-Shaab but was sacked in December after a dispute with the board about player selection.

He is well known for being very animated on the sidelines, using exaggerated hand gestures and movements to inform his team of tactics.

Coaching career:

1993/95 Segesta, 1995/96 Dinamo Zagreb, 1996/97 Linz (AUT), 1997 Slaven Belupo, 1997/98 Samobor, 1998/99 Dinamo Zagreb, 1999/00 Al Massry (EGY), 2000/01 Mura (SLO), 2001 Marsonia, 2001/02 NK Zagreb, 2002/03 Rijeka, 2003/04 NK Zagreb, 2004/06 Croatia, 2008 Croatia Sesvete.
