INFO:

One of the best ever Scottish defenders and the legendary Rangers captain that led them to 9 consecutive league titles. Richard Gough was an exceptional defender and leader, a player who set a perfect example every time he walked out onto the pitch. A real model professional. Gough was a complete defender with excellent marking and tackling skills, commanding in the air and with good ability with the ball at his feet. He was very resilient, he could take a physical beating but would always continue playing to his best capabilities. He could also play at right back, his main position while at Dundee United, with whom he also won the league. When his team was losing, he'd drag the team forward, joining the attack and leading by example. While Gough was certainly a tough defender, he was also fair and always composed, preferring to take the ball cleanly when possible, often through perfect slide tackles. And when he would win the ball, he was good at distributing the ball forwards, earning a reputation as a ball playing defender. His only "weakness" was that he wasn't particularly fast but he was rarely beaten to the ball regardless. He was known for excellent physical preparation which helped him play at a high level until he was almost 40. With the Scottish national team, he participated in 2 World Cups and Euro 92 before falling out with the coaches and retiring prematurely, finishing with 61 caps and 6 goals. With Rangers, in addition to his 9 league titles as captain, he also won 3 Scottish Cups and 6 League Cups, making him the most decorated captain in the club's history. One of the greatest figures in Scottish football.
