Lovagnini was a left-back. His career started in 1939 at Fanfulla. He had his best time at Livorno where he played in 1941-42 and from 1945 to 1949 for a total 159 appearances and 2 goals. He also played for Spezia, Como, Brescia and Reggiana. He retired in 1954.
Since his early years, Lovagnini was considered a promising defender for his powerful, clever and varied style of play as well as his accurate heading game. As a Livorno player, the bulky defender confirmed his qualities, proving himself a tireless fighter, extremely capable in the air, responsive on every ball, powerful in his clearances that sometimes were curved. A pillar of Livorno's back-line in the second half of the 1940s, Lovagnini always put his energy at service of his team, not knowing how to stop his fair exuberance. He was often the last defender, covering the area in front of his goalkeeper and ready to challenge the rushing striker one-on-one.
