Viani was a centre-forward, rarely deployed as winger. His career started in 1931 at Viareggio. He transferred to Fiorentina in 1933, playing until 1935 and from 1936 to 1938, making 98 appearances and scoring 49 goals in total. He played for Lucchese in 1935-36. He had his best time at Livorno where he played from 1938 to 1942, scoring 72 goals in 106 matches. He then played for Napoli, Spezia, Benevento, Viareggio and Massese, retiring in 1951.
An excellent and prolific striker, Viani was a threat for any back-line. He possessed great short sprint and agility to sneak between two defenders, and high dribbling skill to get past one or more opponents. His mix of shot power and shot technique made him a fearsome finisher. His timing, accurate heading and superb jump allowed him to be flawless in the air most of the times. His passing ability was solid as he sometimes created chances for his teammates with accurate ground balls. He also showed an acceptable crossing skill in the rare occasions he was deployed as winger. A decent set piece taker, he took free kicks occasionally and scored six penalties during his time at Livorno. Sometimes, he would fall back close to the midfield and start the attack from there. In his Fiorentina years, he showed a lack of mentality as he would get nervous easily or argue with the referee whenever he was a target of the opposing defenders, attitude that earned some red cards.
