INFO:
Astori was a centre back and left back in case of necessity. He started his professional career as left back at Pizzighettone in Serie C1. After one season at Cremonese, he transferred to Cagliari, making 179 appearances from 2008 to 2014, scoring 3 goals. He then had a less remarkable season at Roma before joining Fiorentina in 2015. He played 109 matches in three years for the Viola, scoring 4 goals. He played for Italy 14 times, scoring once. Astori was tragically found dead on 4th March, 2018. Cagliari and Fiorentina retired the jersey n°13 in his memory.
A tall and strong but not very quick defender, Astori an efficient man marker, gifted with remarkable positional sense that allowed him to intercept passes and shots in the air with the head or on the ground with sliding tackles. Moreover, his excellent aerial ability made him a threat in the opposing box during set pieces. Whereas he had very good anticipation and interception, he wasn't as good when he tackled his opponents, which often resulted in a foul. He possessed a fine technique and long passing ability. Therefore, he could trigger the offense from the back and more rarely from the midfield as he was defensive minded and preferred staying in his own area during active play. On the other hand, he was less effective when playing the ball short as he sometimes miscalculated the time and distance of the pass, gifting the ball to his opponents in the process.
