Last Saturday, Christian Vieri , in his very popular Instagram live conversation, hosted a former teammate from Juventus and the Italian national team, Alessandro Del Piero. From our point of view, the exchange of opinions about their former teammate Alen Bokšić was especially interesting . Vieri played with him at Juventus and Lazio (1997/98), while Del Piero shared a locker room with them at Juventus (1996/97). White Ronaldo , as the owner of Lazio, Sergio Cragnotti then called Boksic, they got the idea to evoke the power of the Italian league and top players and attackers in the then Serie A . The two-minute dialogue within half an hour of conversation took place with a lot of laughter and praise of the rugged Bokšić...

Vieri : Those ten years were great. Lots of strong players in the league ...

Del Piero: And clubs ... And Lazio, when you went there, Veron, Boksic ... Uh, Boksic ...

Vieri : Yes, Boksic, do you remember how huge he was? (laughter)

Del Piero : Mah ... Physiologically he was something inhumane. To be so big and strong, and so fast ...

Vieri : Yes, fast, scary. This has never been seen before, so then dribbling with the right, left ...

Del Pier o: He dribbled everything, but then ... If he had scored 20% of the goals from as many chances as he had, he would have scored 1200 goals.

Vieri : Yes, yes ... (laughs)

Del Piero: OK, we have to find him (that) one flaw, because the rest was impressive.

Vieri : Look, I always tell everyone, but I always tell everyone, he was something impressive, impressive ...

Del Piero : And then he still didn’t get tired at all. I saw him once sweating. Make 1200 sprints and you see one drop of sweat ...

Vieri : Yeah, yeah (laughs), mamma mia, amazing guy.

Del Piero : What a personality ...

Fast, with an incredible strike and a physique that weighs on the defenses. Penetrative, fast, prone to assist, but also a scorer of a series of decisive goals. An incredibly athletic forward – “a 400m runner who got away from track and field,” as former Juventus fitness coach Giampiero Ventrone once dubbed him – in many ways Bokšić was ahead of his time. He was among the first prototypes of the modern striker, in an era when football slowly began moving away from traditional number nines in favour of more dynamic and nimble forwards.

Physically imposing but gifted with excellent technique and searing pace, Bokšić was a riddle many found impossible to solve. “I don’t know who is better,” former teammate Slaven Bilić once said when asked to compare Bokšić with his attacking partner, Davor Šuker. “If you ask me as a centre-back, when you play against Bokšić, he would have slaughtered you. Running, dribbling, going left in the channel. He’d kick you, beat you, whatever. But maybe he wouldn’t score. But Šuker? You’d have a good game against him, but then he’d score a couple.”

Bokšić was a dynamic, well-rounded, physically strong, who was renowned for his technique, skill, creativity, movement, power, stamina, and pace on the ball, which enabled him to open up defences and create space for his teammates with his attacking runs; despite his ability and consistent goalscoring rate throughout his career, he drew criticism at times in the Italian media for his occasional lack of accuracy in front of goal during his time in Serie A. He was also injury prone throughout his career.
