Marco Materazzi was a centre back. He spent most of his career at Inter, playing 276 matches and scoring 20 goals from 2001 to 2011. He also had a good time at Perugia − he was part of the team in three separate spells − playing 106 games, scoring 22 times and having his best period with the Grifoni between 1999 and 2001. He played also for Messina and Everton among others. He gained 41 caps for Italy, scoring twice. He was part of the 2006 FIFA World Cup winning team and scored an important goal in the final.
Materazzi was a tall and strong defender, incredibly effective in the air and gifted with a remarkable elevation, which was an addition to his already huge height. He was an efficient and tough man marker but also a rough player, capable with his tackling but too prone to commit fauls due to his vehemence. He was quite slow but on the other hand was gifted with good technique and fine distribution of the ball. He was a good free kick taker and a penalty specialist. In fact, he scored many goals considering his position and in 2000-01 he even broke Passarella's record of goals scored by a defender in a Serie A season.
