INFO:
Yaqoub is a former centre forward, capable of playing as secondary striker or winger. He spent his entire career at Qadsia from 1969 to 1983. He played for Kuwait 49 matches and scored 36 goals, winning the 1980 AFC Asian Cup and taking part to the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Widely regarded as the greatest player in Kuwait history and one of the best ever from the Arab Gulf, Yaqoub was a complete striker who terrified the opposing goalkeepers with his scoring ability and the defenders with his skills. He wasn't always showy but whenever he got the ball he always tried to something for his team. He was a natural left-footed and extremely accurate with the right too but like Serbian coach Ljubiša Broćić once said, it was like Yacoub « had three legs, the right and the left foot and his head » as he had an excellent heading ability. He could really score in any possible way, by placing the ball or delivering a thunderous shot like he once did against legendary Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin, with the outside, first time, from long range. He occasionally scored from free kick by giving the ball good effect or from penalty with powerful and unstoppable shots. He once managed to score against Santos in a 1-1 draw in 1973. Yacoub's scoring rate may have been a lot higher if he wasn't also a very able passer. In fact, he could distribute the ball with accurate short passes or assist his teammates in the box with good crosses. He often kept the ball while waiting for a teammate to unmark himself, showing remarkable technical and dribbling skills. Moreover, he used to move a lot around the opposing box and even in the midfield, even starting the offense from there with a pass. Then he ran at great speed towards the box and if he was to receive the ball back, he would likely anticipate defenders and goalkeepers with superb timing. Many injuries affected his career, which was still astonishing, forcing him to retire when he was only 30 years old. Brazilian legend Mário Zagallo and Carlos Alberto Parreira ─ both his coaches with Kuwait ─ respectively said about Yacoub: « I didn't imagine there was a player like him in the team and I didn't expect there would be a player of his level in the Middle East » and « he's an international first class player and the Arab Gulf will not produce another player like him ».
