Al-Ghanem is a former central or attacking midfielder. He spent his entire career at Kazma from 1978 to 1992. He played for Kuwait numerous matches, scoring some goals, winning the 1980 AFC Asian Cup and taking part to the 1982 FIFA World Cup. A regular in Kuwaiti squad since he was very young, Al-Ghanem was technically gifted and distinguished especially for his ability to deliver excellent through passes that put his teammates in very favourable positions while his long passes weren't always accurate. Despite the fact that he acted in the center of the midfield with the main task of building up the offense, he was also a good finisher. In fact, he used to rush to the opposing box many times and was top scorer with Kazma in the 1985-86 season. He was particularly threatening first time or from long range as he possessed a very powerful shot on both feet. He was also superb in the air as he had good jump and the ability to send the ball on goal with the head even from less favourable positions. His first Kuwait goal was, in fact, a header after he received a cross from Mohammed Karam.
