Al-Shemmari is a former side back or centre back, capable of playing as defensive midfielder. He spent his entire career at Kazma from 1977 to 1990. He played for Kuwait 68 times, winning the 1980 AFC Asian Cup and taking part to the 1982 FIFA World Cup, always as reserve. A good defender, Al-Shemmari usually was deployed on the right side but was comfortable on the left too. In fact, during the World Cup, he came in as substitute against France and England replacing left back Al-Jasem in both matches. He didn't have a particularly strong physique but possessed fine anticipation with the head and held his own in physical challenges. Nonetheless, he seemed more focused on the attack, supporting the forward line. He sometimes showed glimpse of technical qualities with volley clearances or quick dribbling. He was known for being also a free kick specialist.
