INFOKurt Axelsson is a former Swedish defender. Axelsson was known for his clearances in his own penalty area by means of bicycle kicks, but was forced to interrupt his playing career due to a late-discovered heart defect and he instead became a coach. In 1984, he died in a traffic accident in Belgium, aged 43. At first, Axelsson appeared to be angular and untechnical, but he gradually developed into a world-class defensive player. Despite his relatively short height (178 cm), he was able to dominate the penalty area through his resilience and subsequently trained technical brilliance. Defender with strong positional play, elegant but also strong. He was unlucky, first he broke his leg which practically ended his career. He showed great talent in skiing and football. He represented GAIS, Club Brugge, and A.S.V. Oostende K.M. during a career that spanned between 1964 and 1976. A full international between 1966 and 1971, he won 30 caps for the Sweden national team and was on the squad at the 1970 FIFA World Cup.
