INFO

Regarding his demarcation and technical characteristics, I was surprised, when consulting bibliography for this article, that he is described in various places as a midfielder. I remember him as a wonderful central defender, tough and forceful, but at the same time elegant and clean, usually accompanying Luiz Pereira in the center of the defense, who acted as a free defender. He was a tough marker, but far from the reputation for violence that, fairly or unfairly, followed other South American defenders of the time such as Ovejero or Panadero Díaz. I especially remember both his very quick exits to the court, similar to those we now enjoy from Perea, and his ability to stay cleanly on his feet with the ball with which the forward on duty was trying to dribble him. The truth is that, despite playing a large number of games, he never became the undisputed starter, since in his first years he had to share ownership with Iglesias, and in the rest with Eusebio from Extremadura. It is possible that in his early days at our club he could play effectively in the midfield, but of course later he played as a splendid central defender. In any case, I believe that this location is also the result of the way the press of the time reflected the lineups. Even though the tactical systems were clearly already 4-3-3 or even 4-4-2 (Alberto or Salcedo, who were clearly midfielders, came out to play with the number11 a.m.backs), the newspapers continued to depict the alignments with the old 3-2-5 system. Therefore, one of the two midfielders used to be Benegas (and usually alongside our illustrious captain Adelardo) but in reality his position was that of the defensive line, in the company of the other three “official” defenders. He was tough player but at the same time elegant on the ball. His role was to cover Luis Pereira's offensive runs, he was good marker, strong physically and had solid speed, good in air.

He came to club, from the Libertad Asuncion, early in the 1969-70 season. Did not play absolutely nothing in his first two seasons. Officially included in the template (if anyone wants to check it out, you can consult the book "60 years of the National League Championship", Volume Two, 1988 Editorial Universe), but did not play any official meeting. He just train, but none of the club's coaches made his debut, considering it as a young and inexperienced player was not ready to play in the Spanish League last. In the absence of minutes, he was loaned to Burgos, then in the First Division in the 1971-72 season. There itself who disposed of regularly, playing twenty-seven league games (from the thirty four disputed then, being eighteen tournament teams), scoring two goals and above all, showing his great qualities. This earned him Aleti return to the next season, 1972-73, getting to play in our club six to 1977-78. The following year he returned to Burgos, where he played just eight games over. In total, he played with the elastic pullover 108 league games, scoring a goal in his first season. In regards to his resume, won most of the titles that our team won in that decade. He was twice champions (seasons 1972-73 and 1977-78) and Cup (1975-76 season). He played the final of the 1974 European Cup (the second game, the tiebreaker) and two games (round trip) to the final of the Intercontinental Cup in 1975, on March 12 in Buenos Aires and 10 April in Madrid.

It is not easy to get many information on Benegas, except that he was a tough player. However what crossed my mind is to add DMF as his position because that was his true position in the team (#4 at the time, like Miroslav Pavlovic etc). If we look at Atletico's formations, he was definitely a CB as well, but DMF was i think his original position (also, everywhere he is cited as a midfielder).

Also, his actual height & weight is most probably 1.75m and 69kg:

No need of "information" when you have games to watch.
