Dan Coe was stopper and libero, one of the best ever in Romania football. Very tough and strong with great sense of positioning, although heavy character which is why he was on bench on WC '70 after a dispute with the coach. He was good technically although he didn't often join forward, with some acrobatic overhead clearings in his own box. A bit slow but very good in aerial battles. Dan Coe began his career with his hometown club Rapid Bucharest. In his native Dan Coe was one of the most famous athletes ever. "Our Beckenbauer" mentioned the Romanian football fans, Coe played in Romania for 20 years for an association: From 1951 to 1971 he was tying up the football boots for Rapid Bucharest. After three third places and five runner-up in 1967 he managed the biggest success of his career, winning the Romanian title, as the Rapid was able to prevail against local rivals Dinamo Bucharest. In the European Cup against Juventus Turin Rapid retired after two draws. In the match against Germany, Romania is the first time as captain Coe on the square. The game won in Bucharest Romania. At the end of his career, Dan Coe played from 1971 to 1973 in the Belgian Jupiler League. At Royal Antwerp FC, he was trained by Pál Csernai. Here, too, was very popular and Coe was celebrated by the fans. Simultaneously, he earned his coaching qualifications at the Sports University in Cologne. Coe then returned to Romania, was rejected by the coaches of his former club Rapid, however. He then moved into the Divizia B to FC Galati, with whom he created in 1974, promoted to the Divizia A. In the 1974/75 Coe also played with in the first round, before he ended his career. For a short time afterwards he was coach in Galati and Sighetu Marmaţiei. Coe played 41 games for the Romanian national football team, scoring two goals. His first, on 12 May 1963 against the German Democratic Republic, the last 1971st Against Germany for the first time he wore the captain's armband for the national team. Successes are: Participation in the Olympic Games in 1964, Romanian champion: 1967, Participation in the World Cup: 1970. After the end of his career, Dan Coe traveled to Germany under the pretext of visiting his old colleagues in Belgium. He did not return to Romania and settled in Cologne. On 19 October 1981, he was found hanged in his apartment. Shortly before his death he had given an interview to Radio Free Europe, in which he criticizes the Romanian government strongly. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
